Flood Watch issued May 22 at 10:34PM AKDT until May 24 at 12:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK * WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible. * WHERE...The Yukon River downstream of Mountain Village to the Yukon Delta Coast. * WHEN...Through Friday morning. * IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding along the Yukon River over the Yukon Delta. Low lying areas near Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua, and Kotlik have potential to flood from today through Friday. If an ice jam forms, water could rise rapidly. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - The Yukon River breakup front moved past Emmonak and was 10 miles downstream as of Wednesday afternoon. There is potential for flooding in Emmonak, Alakanuk, Nunam Iqua, and Kotlik as breakup progresses. An observer reported on Wednesday that water level has dropped at Mountain Village and ice has thinned significantly. An observer at Emmonak reported Wednesday morning that water level had come up about 3 ft since Tuesday, that ice had shifted, and that ice remains intact and strong downstream. The observer at Emmonak indicated that the ice level was still well below the bank Wednesday morning. With the river ice in the Yukon Delta thicker than normal this year, it is more likely that ice jams will form as high water comes down river.
